So you want to get pregnant. You schedule your OBGYN exam, you are given a clean bill of health and you are cleared for takeoff! Now what?
Are you concerned about your chances of conceiving a child with autism, ADD, diabetes, or obesity? How might your food choices and lifestyle affect your future child?
Where do you turn for answers, not to just avoid birth defects that are unique to recent generations, but more importantly, to conceiving your extraordinary child?
As early as 10 years old, I saw the devastating effects of pesticides on the children of exposed migrant farm workers in California’s central valley, firsthand. Later, as a father of four sons, I experienced what more and more parents are faced with in today’s world... At five years old, one of my sons was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and Sensory Integration Disorder (now referred to as an Autism Spectral Disorder or ASD).
These experiences made me a better doctor and father; and ultimately led me to dedicate my professional life to evolving an integral organic approach, The Brighton Method to prevent birth defects and optimize fetal brain development during the perinatal period – the most powerful time to impact human development.

Answers and Solutions for Today’s Toxic World

During the early part of my journey as both a parent and a doctor, I found that we did not have the tools we need available to navigate the confusing and toxic landscape of the modern world, and to adequately prepare ourselves to have healthy children. Fortunately, I know for a fact that these challenges can be overcome. I was proactive and oversaw my autistic son’s health care, and ultimately succeeded in resolving his condition within six years.
I had the unique opportunity to study with several modern-day native and indigenous cultures, where I uncovered a common maternal lineage, which included herbal, probiotic, dietary, and lifestyle wisdom absent from our post-modern culture. I found that the women and men in these cultures did not have the same reproductive conditions seen in the Western World.
Aspiring to integrate the perinatal wisdom in these cultures with modern trends in reproductive medicine and perinatal research, I developed The Brighton Method to provide couples with practical solutions to navigate through this modern maelstrom and realize their goal of naturally conceiving and of having an extraordinary child.

What is There To Do Before You Conceive?

Thanks to Dr. Mercola and supporters of transparency in GMO labeling, you may already be aware of the dangers of genetically engineered foods and the importance of eating superfoods. Obviously, your lifestyle choices and the choices of your partner affects your individual health, but you might be surprised to learn how critical those choices are, even before conception when it comes your baby’s health.
For those of you familiar with Weston Price’s research, it is important to note that the indigenous peoples he studied enjoyed perfect teeth and amazing health, as a result of their balanced native diets. These healthy cultures were fortunate in not having to deal with fluoride in their water, GMOs, EMF radiation, toxic homes, endocrine disruptors, trans fats, and refined foods... much less artificial sweeteners, MSG, or the specter of hundreds of chemicals now turning up in mother’s milk!
Preventing birth defects in your future child, and giving your child the very best start in life often takes more effort from you than taking a prenatal vitamin, getting exercise and steering clear of genetically engineered foods. What I invite you to consider is that getting pregnant and having a child in the 21st century is a bit like making it through a field of land mines in one piece. Land mines of modern society can create all kinds of havoc, including infertility and birth defects; both overt and subtle. Subtle birth defects almost always go undiagnosed and undetected, because as parents we see our children as perfect creations often overlooking these subtleties.

Aren’t Birth Defects Rare?

Sadly the amount of overt birth defects has skyrocketed around the world in recent years. Setting that disturbing fact aside for a moment, we must expand the definition of birth defects and address the realization that a defect includes anything a child is born with that suppresses its full potential, whether that be intellectual, physical, or emotional. Since there is no way to tell what a child’s potential ‘could have been,’ these subtle deficiencies often do not get tallied as birth defects.
For instance, you would note if your child had an IQ of 130, but you may not note that your child suffers from a congested liver and food sensitivities, both of which often lead to weak digestion, bloating, frequent headaches… Chances are you would not trace these conditions back to your health before conception, or consider these to be birth defects per se, but the origin of these conditions almost always ties back to you and your partner’s health before conception.
My goal is to shine a spotlight on these and other pre-existing blind spots, giving you the tools and opportunity to pre-empt the manifestation of both obvious and more subtle birth defects now... before your future child’s life begins.

Give Your Child the Greatest Gift!

The secret of having a healthy, extraordinary child is that you, the mother AND the father must prepare before conception. The moment that you conceive a child, you essentially “roll the dice”. Your future child is depending on you as his or her future mother and father to be aware, to prepare, to plant your love in preconception action. Ensuring the wellbeing of your child later requires that you take action now, because later is…too late.
Once you have conceived and given birth, your child’s biological, emotional, and psychological destiny has already been set in motion.
Everything you do after conception - during pregnancy, birth, and in the early years - are all important. However, these actions are geared towards trying to affect the already thrown dice, and pale in comparison to the right actions taken before conception. Practicing preconception preparation dramatically shifts the odds in your favor... in favor of conceiving a healthy child.
While our diet and lifestyles have become more synthetic, artificial, and genetically modified; fortunately, our understanding of epigenetics, genetics, nutrition, physiology, and education has led to a renaissance in human evolution; giving us the predictable ability to conceive, birth, and raise healthy, happy children. The key is for both parents to invest some time and energy in detoxing and strengthening their organs and glands, cleaning up their homes, and proactively navigating safely around the most common land mines that contribute to birth defects and other developmental challenges.

Brighton Baby’s Preconception Checklist

While the following list may seem overwhelming, consider that on average, most Americans spend around 4,000 hours in college; 240 hours researching and buying a house; and 20 hours buying a car... while most of us invest very little to no time learning how to conceive a beautifully healthy child. Considering what is at stake, our modern values are backwards.
Deepen your level of sexual intimacy and bonding in order to bathe the sperm and egg in a bath of ecstatic hormones at the moment of conception Learn how to resolve chronic inflammation and low grade chronic infections
Improve sperm health and boost your sperm count to at least 150 million before you conceive Clear up scar tissue and other blockages to free up your chances of conceiving naturally
Minimize autism/ADD, diabetes, childhood obesity, asthma and allergies in your future child Naturally resolve recurring prostate inflammation, vaginal yeast infections, systemic candida, urinary tract infections, and endometriosis before conception
Increase your intake of healthy protein, fats, prebiotic sugars, and antioxidants to support your future child’s optimal development Rebuild your gut with human strain probiotics
Discover the importance of addressing total body hygiene and dental infections before you conceive Detoxify your organs, glands, and tissues of heavy metals, estrogen-mimicking chemicals, and other toxins
Nourish and balance your internal biological terrain Determine your future child’s birth defect risks before you conceive so that you can compensate with targeted nutrients
Balance the structural integrity of your pelvic floor and core muscles to promote conception and optimal childbirth Get educated about the risks of vaccinating you and your baby in the womb

America Today is Very Different from the America of Our Grandparents

This is a new America, and the rules have changed. Today, our food is infested with GMOs and pesticides, we pop prescription pills like candy, our guts are barren from generations of antibiotics, and we are being injected and exposed to heavy metals and excitotoxins at epidemic levels... all in the name of public health.
Modern medicine has not been successful at thwarting the growing infertility and birth defect trends. Infertility rates in the Western world have also skyrocketed. Over 30 percent of couples are considered infertile and half of babies born today are being born with one or more subtle birth defects. Around 1 in 3 American children are obese, another nine percent have severe asthma, and two percent of boys are severely autistic. In U.S. public schools, 13 percent of children require special education services to make it through school.

Your Epigenetic Inheritance

You inherited more than your grandmother’s necklace and your grandfathers engraved cufflinks from your parents. In addition, we inherited their epigenetic toxins - heavy metals, pharmaceutical drugs, hormonal birth control pills, vaccines, antibiotics, and chronic infections. Together, these toxins accumulate with each passing generation... contaminating our internal terrain - the terrain that surrounds our sperm and eggs.
Getting pregnant today is like playing Russian roulette with your family’s genes. Fortunately, we have reached a turning point where you can reclaim your family’s future by gaining access to and eliminating these stockpiles of toxins stored within our organs, fat, and glands can be challenging. Oftentimes, the ‘cure’ is more treacherous than the ‘disease.’ For this reason, it is important that couples have a roadmap to safely detoxify these negative epigenetic triggers... wiping (some of) your genetic slate clean for your future child.

The Secret to Having an Extraordinary Child

My recently published Brighton Baby book is a revolutionary guide to preconception and conception; a step-by-step organic approach that redefines what it means to ‘prepare the womb’ for conception. A few of the hundreds of topics the book addresses are:
  • Some 60 days before an egg is released at ovulation, it begins to ripen, drawing on the nutrients nestled in the ovarian environment to prepare it for its chance at life.
  • As women get older, their bodies tend to convert more estrogen-mimicking chemicals (e.g. bisphenol A, pesticides, phthalates, birth control pills, etc.) into testosterone, one of the many factors that seems to correlate with autism risk.
  • One of the keys to reversing this trend is to detoxify before conception and to take aromatase inhibitors: foods and nutrients that bind excess testosterone in the body. The other is to strengthen the liver, which is responsible for binding up and eliminating these excess chemicals and hormones.
  • The strongest, most defined predictor of miscarriages is abnormal (deformed) sperm. After all, sperm is being made in real-time in response to its environment. If a man produces a batch of semen with 30 percent ‘abnormal swimmers’, then his partner has around a 30 percent chance of miscarrying their child. Ensuring that a man has abundant, healthy sperm is just one of many parts of a couple’s preconception checklist.
  • Sperm is constantly being manufactured ‘from scratch’ using the ingredients available. If you or your parents have accumulated heavy metals, these heavy metals can suppress the liver and interfere with sperm production. Cleansing the liver before conception is one of the key ways to reduce your chances of morning sickness during pregnancy.
  • And those chronic infections festering underneath that old root canal, and inside those biofilm houses within your gut can take many months to a year or more to clear out... all key items on your preconception checklist.
More than just a prescription for what to eat, and which nutrients to take, Brighton Baby can help you and your partner figure out why you may be having a difficult time conceiving, why you may have miscarried, how to reduce your chances of miscarriage, and how to handle recurring yeast infections, endometriosis, and other common reproductive challenges. Together, we parents can change the world, one extraordinary child at a time!
