There’s no purchase that bums me out more than having to pick up some nasty soap for my dishwasher or clothes washer in a plastic bottle that will have to be thrown away when I’m done with it. I’ve been working on finding a good homemade dishwasher detergent for a while and I’ve found a recipe that seems to work.
I sought out a borax-free recipe as well. Borax is a mineral that occurs naturally and is typically mined sustainably. There have been some claims that borax is carcinogenic, but it’s not at all true. Nevertheless, borax can make you sick if you consume it and can negatively impact your endocrine and reproductive systems, so using borax to wash your dishes isn’t the best plan. So let’s get down to it.
You will need:
- 2 Cups of Washing soda
- 1 Cup of Baking soda
- 1 Cup of Citric acid
- 1/2 Cup of Kosher salt
- 1 Teaspoon of Liquid castile soap
- 1/2 cup of White vinegar
- 15 – 20 Drops of Essential oils (optional)
- Ice cube tray (2)
This recipe should give you between 30 and 50 loads. Here’s how we do it:
- Mix the dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
- Gradually pour in the vinegar, just a little bit at a time. Some fizzing will probably happen.
- Mix in the castile soap and essential oil if you choose to use it.
- Pack the mixture into icecube trays. Make sure they’re well compacted.
- Set the trays out in a warm, sunny spot, allowing them to dry for about 24 hours.
- Take the tabs out of the trays and store in a tight-lidded container.
Boom. Pretty easy. In all honesty, you don’t have to use an entire tab if you have a light load or a smaller dishwasher. You can cut them in half and prolong this recipe’s lifespan. And at the end of the day, you’re only spending around $.09 to run a load through the dishwasher. That’s definitely quite the savings!
